Community Park
The Channahon Park District received a
2010 Open Space Land Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) grant
administered by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Grant
funding totaling $400,000 will be used for improvements at Community
Park, the District's largest and first park.
Located on McClintock Road, east of
I-55; Community Park was initially developed in the late 70's and
early 80's. Improvements include:
-
reconstruction of the
two tennis courts and one basketball court in the park
-
paved ADA accessible
walking access to the Oak Grove picnic area, and ADA
accessibility to the washroom facilities by the main playground
-
construction of a new
'sprayground'
-
a new play area,
horseshoe and bags courts, and an amphitheater in the Oak Grove
picnic area
-
bird habitat and
interpretive features
The project will begin in early June and
is expected to be completed by this fall. The ballfields, main
playground, pavilions, trails and disc golf course will remain open
throughout the project. Safety fencing will be installed around the
areas under construction.
OSLAD Grants are funded by a portion of
the State's real estate transfer tax. 49 park and recreation
agencies are receiving approximately $17 million in 2010.
"These grants will help create a better
quality of life in many communities throughout Illinois, while also
creating jobs in this tough economy," said Governor Quinn. "By
investing in parks and playgrounds, we are also investing in the
lives of children and families who need more opportunity to play
indoors."
