Ages 1st-8th grades
Students will learn about the exciting art of mask-making and why different cultures wear masks. We will look at a variety of masks and discuss design elements used in these masks. Planning and preparation will be emphasized and students will create at least two different mask designs (on paper) that incorporate pattern and other elements discussed. Afterwards, students will use plastic face molds and plaster strips activated by water to create three-dimensional masks. After the masks have dried, students will draw their design onto their hardened mask and carefully paint, using tempera paint, onto their masks. Students can bring feathers, beads, cardboard and other natural materials to enhance their masks. Students can expect to bring home a colorful plaster mask and two 8x11 mask designs.
